ABOUT ME

I've been a seamstress for over 48 years and love to sew!

My name is Marie, and I am the owner/creator of Calico Junction Inc. I have been sewing, crocheting and cross stitching for over 48 years.  I learned how to sew in the garment district in Manhattan, NY when I was a teenager and fell in love with sewing. Part of it came from my genes as both my grandmothers sewed and crocheted. Even one of my grandfather’s was a tailor! My nana worked as a milliner in a hat shop in the early 1930’s.
I started out making my own clothes and later moved into quilt making. The quilt making came about as therapy for my mom as she recovered from breast cancer. It was a fun way to bring us even closer together. After she passed away, I continued with my quilting and sewing.
I went back to working on craft shows and offering a quilting service for my customers. I also became a quilting teacher! It was at one of these craft shows that I met the original owner of the pellet/weighted dolls I currently make. She designed them but wasn’t a seamstress and I was.

Therefore, we decided to work together. I made the dolls or at least sewed them together and she painted the faces and stuffed them. I then added the clothes to the collection and there was a time I even made a little bassinette, pillow, and quilt for the dolls!
As time went on and our own families were growing, she decided to quit the craft show business and wanted to sell her dolls. She would only sell them to me since I already knew how to make them. I was thrilled. I made a few dolls here and there.

I also went back to college (at 47) and got my bachelor's degree and master’s degree in reading and went to work at the local charter school and the school district. I opened an Etsy store in 2012 and I still have the store opened. I am also going back on the craft show circuit and will be attending shows this fall.
